Managing inventory with more than one unit of measure (UoM) for different items is a very common scenario in any inventory management process.
And managing same item with different UoMs in different types of transactions (like sales, purchase, etc.) is also common. But managing same item in same type of transactions with different UoMs may not be so common.
Till date SAP Business One has been handling the above mentioned first two cases perfectly. And now with the advent of extended multiple UoM in SAP Business One 9.0, the third case can also be handled efficiently in SAP Business One. Now in same type of transactions, let’s say in sales, we can create documents with more than one UoM for the same item as per requirement. By creating UoM groups we can setup the conversion from one unit to another within a group. SAP Business One will automatically convert the quantity as per the selected UoM’s conversion factor in the corresponding group.

A UoM can be used in multiple groups, and that is why a new field in
item Master Data has been added as shown in the figure. This UoM group in the Item Master Data defines the conversion factor to be used in the documents when it is used.
Not only unit conversion, different pricing for different UoMs for the same item can also be setup. This can help us to setup volume discounts for items more easily.
Different UoMs are required for various kinds of hierarchical packing structures or various transformations of the items in various stages of logistics most of the time. So in inventory taking or inventory data automation different kinds of barcodes may also be required at different stages of the item. For e.g. a beer bottle, on its label, may have a different barcode than the barcode on its box pack. Hence, to fulfil this requirement SAP Business One 9.0 facilitates managing different barcodes for different UoMs as well.

Following figure shows how the end users are facilitated to select the desired UoM for any item on document creation.
On document creation the availability check of the item is also done in the same unit which is selected in the document. In addition to this the Price Report can help to do a quick unit specific price list checking as shown in the following figure.
How the packing can be done or what are the packaging-types at different level of UoM can also be defined from the Item Master Data as shown in the following figure.
The major setups of this new feature can be found in the administration module as shown in the following figure. Setting up the group definitions is a primary configuration for Multiple Units of Measures in SAP Business One 9.0.
